Google Execs Prosecuted in Italy
This (February 2010) video brings us some news, but it also points out how powerful social media can be and the concerns over privacy.
It also brings to light the power of governments (and their courts) along with differing opinions of “freedom of information”.
What do you think? Should GOOGLE Execs be responsible?

Doodle for GOOGLE
From the article ” Doodles are known as the decorative changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists and scientists.”
I have always enjoyed the doodles, but did not know the history. One of my Favorites is featured in the article, Einstein’s Birthday
CNN Article on GOOGLE Doodle
Perhaps you might submit a suggestion. Check out the history and pick a favorite.

Article from JS Online
Web Servers Require Cooling Water
Interesting that one of our top natural resources, and one of the most precious could attract one of the highest tech companies to our area. Not for our “wet ware” but for our water.
From the article “Grossman’s research shows that Google, Yahoo and Microsoft continue to scour the globe for new sites for their server farms, which can use up to 360,000 gallons of water a day.”
Interesting. What do you think?

From CNN
Google Search By Sight
From the article…..
“On Monday, Google announced the ability to perform an Internet search by submitting a photograph.
The experimental search-by-sight feature, called Google Goggles, has a database of billions of images that informs its analysis of what’s been uploaded, said Vic Gundotra, Google’s vice president of engineering. It can recognize books, album covers, artwork, landmarks, places, logos, and more.”
It does not do facial recognition.
What do you think? Cool eh?

Thank you Wendy for your suggestion.
The article “Google’s ingenious plan to spruce up the browser” or Chrome for Clunkers is an interesting article and short video sabout browsers. Personally, I like the CHROME browser from GOOGLE especially for accessing webmail (it seems to be faster), I also like the fact that it is a GOOGLE Search tool and browsers where I can be lazy and not even type a URL, I just type what am looking for.
The article also promises that it will be a big part of GOOGLE Wave — which you have perhaps read about in this blog.
So what do you use and why? If you have used Chrome, do you think it is faster, or just anti-Explorer?

Thanks to Hugh for this recommendation on “The World According to GOOGLE”.
CNN Money published an article called “The World Acccording to GOOGLE” wherein they discuss some of the economic trending that GOOGLE is doing. Also, we have spoken in class about GOOGLE TRENDS and more specifically, the GOOGLE Flu Trends . Knowing what people are searching for can yield some powerful trending information.
What do you think about this technology? How can it lead to competitive advantage? What would you like trended?

Another interesting article in FAST Company about “AR” (Augmented Reality) — or is it Artificial Reality? The article entitled ” Is Google Street View joining the Augmented Reality Fray?” asks “The augmented reality explosion is literally just beginning, and it seems Google’s painstakingly-gathered geotagged imagery is best used as artificial reality. It’ll be interesting to see which tech remains useful and relevant for longer–and will Google find itself relegated to merely being the data pipe that feeds popular AR apps, or will it flip a switch and turn this into an AR app of its own?”.
The article links a video of the “Street View” app. What do you think? Cool?
This “Augmented Reality” seems to be picking up some buzz. What do you think? Will this catch on (diffuse)? Where will it go?

I am a huge fan of workflow and “digitizing” (using information technology to transform “paper-based” processes). An article in Industrial Distribution Magazine (Justifying Going Electronic” ) states ”automating just one business transaction can make a big difference in your bottom line”. The article goes on to talk about the cultural changes that occur and then go through the economics of digitizing the invoicing process. The article also points out that the process of automating processes is not just for “big” business. ”When asked why they still use manual processes, a popular answer for many companies is “we are not large enough to justify the costs or reap the benefits of electronic processes.”
“Going electronic”, digitizing, or automating processes does not require installing SAP or some other monster ERP package, it can also mean using popular “office” software suites and some simple information technology tools. I see some HUGE possibilities in collaborative technologies and in particular open source workflow tools as well as GOOGLE’s new WAVE especially for knowledge-based processes.
What do you think? What are some examples of process digitization you have participated in? What are some proejcts you can forsee?

An article in FORTUNE Magazine entitled “How Facebook is Taking Over our Lives” discusses the profound impact that Facebook is having on all of our lives. As a technology, it is fascinating. The online article has some great data that presents some amazing facts about the growth of Facebook users, daily users, time of use per day etc.. As a technology, it took only 5 years for it to reach 150 million users. The telephone took 89 years, TV took 38 years. Usefulness aside, it is a huge phenomenon. Microsoft has taken a stake in Facebook, has been collaborating on some projects while competing in some respects. Why?
What do you think about Facebook?
Where will it go?
What is the role of Facebook in the “corporate world”?

So, just because 72% of the search industry is dominated by GOOGLE (according to the source linked in the article) we have been labeled as GOOGLE Junkies. The article mentions a number of alternative and specialty search tools, but one I found interesting was WORIO (BTW Powered by GOOGLE) .
The article, from FAST COMPANY, entitled “How to Kill Your Addiction to GOOGLE and Get More Productive”
Are we addicted to GOOGLE or search? What do you think of WORIO? What is its main benefit?

When creating our technology strategy, we need a full understanding of our business strategy and the market (economy), we must consider purchasing other firms or platforms as part of that strategy. The following linked article on FORBES.com describes some of the thought process.
Why ORACLE wants Solaris
Is this a good idea for ORACLE? For anyone else? GOOGLE Perhaps? What are the Lessons Learned from this article on creating technology strategy?

Personally I think that RSS is one of the most under used, cool technologies of the internet age. Notice I did not say new because it has been around for quite a while. In fact, many people are already using the technology when they get news updates, weather updates, or just about any other notification through digital means.
HP has published an article that explains this technology/capability very nicely. In “The Skinny on RSS Feeds “ we learn about RSS Readers and other capabilities. (I have set up iGOOGLE with an RSS Tab). From the article “RSS isn’t just for articles. Pretty much any information source that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: recent additions to blogs, details of special discounts, or alerts as to when new web content is available”. This concept is the aspect of RSS we need to think about. I believe, when used as part of a knowledge management system, especially as part of a new products management process we can develop tremendous competitive advantage. Just my opinion.
What do you think? How do you use RSS?
