  1. Gene – you were ahead of your time at Brady with KM initiatives – including the physical layout of the NOTES Team area, which probably leveraged collaboration the best.

Just tried some similar KM initiatives in a product development project at Enercon with great success. Completely redesigned our induction cap sealer, in record time (about 1/2 typical project length) and met our (self-imposed) deadlines to display the new product at PACK Expo in Las Vegas. Co-located all engineers, utilized a diverse team makeup (Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, I.T. and Engineering). Our team met weekly to check on goals, progress and most importantly – MAKE DECISIONS! Using the same techniques to make the journey from prototype to commercialized product and that seems to be working well too!

  2. While I found nothing to disagree with in this presentation, I would consider these more approaches to improving project management than knowledge management. Correctly closing and documenting a project is key to a project, as is having the ability to use lessons learned from other projects. And these opportunities are strengthened with a good knowledge management system.

But the article speaks specifically to improving communication (key knowledge area of Project Management) and how to make better use of meetings. Again, I agree with the entire article and see how the concepts improved productivity and success. I especially like the empasis on social networking within and outside of their projects. This idea can only potentially increase a knowledge management database, as well as the information available to a given project, increasing its odds of success.

Good article, good information, poorly named in my opinion.
