From Government Computer News

Thanks Hugh

Mobile phones are used to access the Army’s portal for soldiers to access information from their Knowledge Online Portal.

“The Army Knowledge Online portal, a repository of online information, distance-learning tools, e-mail and other resources for 2.6 million Army users. The Web-based service is now part of a broader service known as Defense Knowledge Online.”

Mini solar chargers and video goggles are also used.

“Army officials are tapping into the ingenuity of its young workforce and responding to their predisposition for smarter gadgets at the same time by developing an array of Go Mobile devices — new communications and conferencing devices that can fit into a soldier’s pocket while going easy on the service’s pocketbook.”

Sounds like we should all be following in the Army’s footsteps for our firms.  What do you think?

IT and Competitive Advantage

Dec 5th, 2009 | By Gene A. Wright | Category: Breakout Topics, Feature, Information Technology, Leadership, Technology, Technology Strategy

From CIO Insight

Expert Voices: James Champy

“In many of the companies I wrote about, IT was absolutely central to the business model. The CIOs were very front and center in the design of the business. Even if the companies weren’t IT-based, there was a sense of IT as the great enabler that allows them to do much of what they do.

That’s contrary to the notion that IT is no longer strategic because it’s ubiquitous. That’s a very dangerous argument, because the extension of that argument is that because it’s ubiquitous and no longer strategic, it can be relegated deep into the organization.”  “At every one of these companies I’ve written about, IT was very strategic and enabled them to adapt and develop new business  models. Therefore, it was critically important to the executives and the founders to understand not just how IT was working inside their company, but what it could do.”

And there you go.

The Sheriff’s Office purchased 14 of the handheld scanners that connect to state and local databases and the FBI Repository for Individuals of Special Concern to identify individuals. The devices allow police officers to positively identify people in the field, instead of returning to the jail to process the information.”

Pastiche — Technology? Keyword Art? Both?

Nov 4th, 2009 | By Gene A. Wright | Category: Feature, Information Technology, Technology

Thanks Hugh.

Pastiche

This is a video with additional images.

From the site linked “The city is a composite of impressions. Beyond the built environment, it is a constantly changing pastiche of associations and experiences—not just of the people who inhabit it, but of the larger community. New York City, in particular, has two realities: the reality of the physical environment, and the reality of the idea—of what the city and its diverse neighborhoods signify. Inseparably intertwined, these two realities constantly continue to inform each other. Pastiche is a dynamic data visualization that maps keywords from blog articles to the New York neighborhoods they are written in reference to, geographically positioned in a navigable, spatial view. Keywords are assigned based on relevance and recency, surrounding their corresponding neighborhoods. The result is a dynamically changing description of the city, formed around individual experiences and perspectives.”
